Key to any emergency response is the ability to communicate effectively. Thanks to a new partnership with T-Mobile, the Nassau and Suffolk Chapters of the American Red Cross will be better prepared to serve Long Islanders during times of disaster.
“We’re proud to partner with the Red Cross, the nation’s leading first responder organization, to serve as its official wireless emergency communications provider on Long Island in both Nassau and Suffolk. At the heart of our partnership is a very strong commitment—we want to connect Long Islanders who need help in an emergency with those who can provide it,” said Jane Builder, T-Mobile’s Northeast Senior Manager for External Affairs.
Recently, T-Mobile provided BlackBerry cellular phones—complete with unlimited minutes, e-mail and Internet service—to be used by key staff at the local Red Cross chapters. Additionally, “pay as you go” phones were donated for use in Red Cross vehicles.
“Communication is everything in a disaster,” said Frank Cassano, chief executive officer of the Nassau Red Cross. ”Thanks to T-Mobile, not only do we have the tools necessary to relay vital information during an event—whether by voice or e-mail—the money saved will allow us to better serve the public.”
Because the American Red Cross is a non-profit agency, it relies on the generosity of the public to provide relief to those who have been affected by disaster. On Long Island, Red Cross volunteers have responded to 235 local disasters—mainly house fires—in the past twelve months.
